DURASHELL Transferable Utility Body
Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do I need a removable utility body rather than a cab/chassis mounted standard utility body?
A DURASHELL Transferable Truck Body has several advantages over the traditional style utility bodies.
• You are not limiting the uses of a specific vehicle, increasing the flexibility and actual value of the vehicle.
• There is no need to purchase, maintain, and insure multiple vehicles – one truck can be used for several operations or as both a work and a “play” truck.
• Simplifies purchasing or leasing.
• Standardization is becoming more important to fleet managers. DURASHELL allows you to purchase or lease standard pickup trucks that will satisfy several user groups.
• Purchase or lease a work truck and when the vehicle arrives, quickly install the DURASHELL and the crew can go to work. No waiting weeks or months for a body to be installed.
• No need to pay for a new utility body every time you wear out a chassis. When the chassis is replaced, or you’re at the end of your lease, there is no need to pay for a new utility body. With DURASHELL, simply transfer the body to a new or used truck.
•DURASHELL will outlast most standard utility bodies in harsh environments due to a large portion of the body being protected from elements such as, road debris and salt, by the truck bed.
• You never lose access to your body, tools, and equipment.
• If your truck requires service or is in an accident, simply transfer the entire body to another truck and continue working and earning.
• The vehicle does not require recertification.
• Factory fuel lines, bumpers, electrical are left untouched.
• Resale value on a pickup truck is typically higher than on a used chassis with a bolt on utility body.
• Unload the body at a job site and use the body as a job box.
• Save fuel and wear and tear on your chassis
2. How do I remove the body and do I need to unload it first?

• The DURASHELL body is designed to be removed without unloading, if applicable the material rack would need to be unloaded. Also, to be able to remove the unit from the truck, there are four clamps inside the unit which need to be removed.
• There are three methods of removing the DURASHELL. First, the body may have forklift tunnels mounted to the floor and accessible from the rear of the unit. Simply open the rear doors and you have easy access to the forklift tunnels. Second, if a forklift is not available, we offer lifting jacks that are inserted in mounting tubes at all four corners and the body is lifted similar to a camper lifting system. Third, we offer crane brackets, that are inserted into the mounting tubes and the body can be raised from the bed.
• The first time you install the DURASHELL it may take you 40 to 60 minutes (with a forklift), but as you get used to the process, you will be able to move the unit from one truck to another in 15 to 20 minutes.
• The DURASHELL is built strong, it has to be. It is designed to be moved in and out of a truck on a regular basis. If you were to move a standard bolt-on service body, only a few times a year, the welds would probably not hold up.
• If you are using jacks, each jack has a 2000 pound capacity. This gives you a total lifting capability of 8000 pounds.

3. Does the DURASHELL have as much storage space as a standard 8’ utility body?
• The DURASHELL actually has MORE. An standard 8’ utility body has 40-45 cubic feet of storage space, the DURASHELL units range from 90 to 365 cubic feet of storage space.
4. What is the DURASHELL warranty?
• The DURASHELL service bodies have a 10 year limited warranty on the fiberglass and 1 year limited warranty on mechanicals (hinges, door handles and so on...).
5. I have had my utility body broken into many times, is the DURASHELL secure?
• If you do not need your tools and equipment, remove DURASHELL and secure all of your tools and equipment in the shop or garage.
6. How much weight can I put on the bed?
• The bed floor is rated at 2000 pounds.
7. Will the DURASHELL damage the bed rails of my truck?
No, The DURASHELL has a 'no holes drilled' design and does not sit on top of the bed rails. The weight of the unit is placed on the bed/frame of the truck. The clamps are to keep the DURASHELL from moving horizontally.
8. What trucks do the DURASHELL fit?
• The Standard DURASHELL 90 and 165 models fit Light Duty Pickup Trucks. Standard long bed models .
• The DURASHELL 140/170, 230 and 325/365 models fits Ford, GMC, Chevrolet, Dodge, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan ½, ¾ & 1 Ton pickup trucks.
9. Do I need special mirrors?
• Most of the current DURASHELL users are utilizing the standard factory mirrors.
10. How is the DURASHELL attached?
• The truck is not drilled to mount to the body. The truck bed remains in its original condition. The DURASHELL has four mounting clamps that are clamped to the bed rail. Installation and removal of the body requires the installation or removal of four bolts.
11. Can I keep my tailgate on with the body?
• No, before the DURASHELL is installed the tailgate must be removed.
12. Can I get a ladder rack and side access doors for the DURASHELL?
• Yes, all of the options that are available for utility bodies are available with the DURASHELL; for example, ladder racks, side access doors, generator cabinets, shelving, windows, forklift tunnels etc.
13. Can I get the DURASHELL painted to match my cab?
• Yes, the DURASHELL can be painted to match most Ford, GM, or Dodge factory colors for a small additional charge and only on orders of 10 or more units.
14. I currently use a Van with shelving inside. Can I use that shelving in a DURASHELL?
The DURASHELL 325/365 are built with mounting strips on the interior side walls which make it easy to mount many types of shelving and cabinets. We can not guarantee your equipment will be transferable but we can say that most van up fits have been transferred.
15. When I receive my unit, can I lift it up off of the pallet with the jacks?
No, The jacks are too tall to lift the unit from the pallet or the ground for that matter. You should use the forklift you used to take it off the truck to do the initial install. You can use the jacks only after the unit is in the pickup truck to remove it.
